What is your mandate in the new Ministry?
In my Ministry I am looking after forestry and wildlife including conservation and survey of flora and fauna, afforestation & regeneration of degraded areas.
Forest is in the concurrent list and as such policy and planning is the major responsibility of the Central Government (Ministry of Environment and Forests), whereas its implementation is mainly with the State Governments/ UT Administrations. Increasing Forest or Tree cover to minimum 33% of the total land area of the country and the Sustainable Forest Management are the major mandates of this Ministry.
Conservation of India’s wildlife and expansion and consolidation of protected areas (which now occupy around 4.8% of the geographical area of the country) is priority mandate of my ministry. Combating illegal trade in wildlife and its derivatives is another area of focused action. A National wildlife Crime Control Bureau has been established for this purpose.
As a Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Law and Order were your main areas of concern. Now the entire country’s environmen
In both the Ministries, one commonality exists i.e. the implementation part rests with the State Governments/UT Administrations.
While in the Home Ministry my responsibilities mainly concerned about disaster management, border management,
administration of north eastern States and Union Territories, control of terrorism, narcotics etc. now in the
Ministry of Environment & Forests the responsibilities mainly concern about bringing 33% of the geographical
area under forest tree cover and preservation of wildlife. This would help in control of green house gases
emission and global warming. India is becoming a developed nation, hence the developmental requirements are
ever increasing. The task of greening India and maintaining clean environment is very important and challenging.
