UTS Voice

Port Blair: The Lt. Governor Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM, alongwith the First Lady of these Islands, Smt. Bhawanee Singh visited Chatham Saw Mill and witnessed the entire operational process of the Mill.

They also visited the Forest Museum located in the premises of the Chatham Saw Mill and witnessed the exhibits displayed in the museum. While appreciating the important role played by Mill in the development of islands, he desired that the history of Chatham Saw Mill should be well documented for the present and future generations.

Later, the Lt. Governor visited Van Sadan, where he was given a presentation by the PCCF, Shri S. S. Choudhury on the activities of Forest Department in the Islands. The Lt. Governor advised all the officers to provide materials on flora and fauna in the form of pamphlets and books for the education of not only the children of the Islands but also for children living in other parts of the country.

The Lt. Governor further underscored the need for setting up of a good library where forest related matters would be displayed, which would be utilized for the education of the people of the Islands as well as tourist. He also directed all the officers and staff of the department to actively participate in the overall development of the Islands. He appreciated the pragmatic approach adopted by the department to strike a balance between conservation and development.
