 Regional :-  Livestock extension programme in Andaman Islands

Port Blair: As part of the ongoing programmes of animal husbandry extension and training in these islands, a series of training programmes were organized at villages of Bambooflat, Hope Town, Ferrargunj and Brindaban Panchayats by the Department of Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, Wimberlygunj. The main focus of these programmes was on scientific livestock production viz dairy, goatery, piggery and fodder production.

Altogether 44 farmers attended these programmes. Dr. Ashok Gupta, Vet. Asst. Surgeon interacted with the livestock owners and detailed the various benefits of scientific production, the importance of cross breeding, castration of scrub bulls and proper feeding means these programmes were followed by veterinary health camps in which 416 animals were brought, examined and given the required dose of deworming for parasitic infestations and other necessary treatment on the spot. During the camps, 11 animals were tested for pregnancy and 3 bulls were castrated. As an input for fodder production, 4000 fodder cuttings of hybrid napier and 77 minikits were also supplied to the interested farmers for developing fodder for their animals.
