 Regional :-  Bid to sensitize children on disaster preparedness

Kamorta, Disaster preparedness has become a paramount importance for everyone in these islands in the aftermath of the tsunami and preparing the children has also assumed great significance in this context.

Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan in partnership with Save the Children decided to take up this task and organized a one-day sub-divisional level workshop under children led Disaster Preparedness Project in the premise of Labour Welfare Association, Kamorta. Altogether 70 people took part in this all important programme. The workshop aimed at presenting the children-led disaster preparedness plans by the children & community before the relevant government officials, Tribal council and other agencies who work in Nancowry group of islands. Children from Kamorta, Nancowry, Katchal & Teressa islands took part in the workshop and they presented the plans & mitigation strategies emerging from plans of 25 villages. Participant children from these places described the process about the preparation of planning exercise and explained how they identified the risk areas & infrastructures in their villages by presenting risk, resource & vulnerability map of Hitui village. Moreover, a group of children presented the identified risk & mitigation strategies of 25 villages emerged during disaster preparedness planning exercise. Then, an open session was facilitated to give remarks, commitments and suggestions. Everybody including children took part in an interactive session disaster preparedness.

Speaking on the occasion, the Asst. Commissioner, Nancowry suggested for updating the plans after completion of permanent shelter. He said that the Govt. has fund to address the immediate needs of the community. He assured all the village captains to undertake necessary steps in reducing risk of the village. The function concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Shri Alphonse Toppo, DYC, NYK Kamorta.
