Regional :-  South Goa: More Thieves Less Police
UTS Voice

Margao: The police have basic duties like crime prevention and detection, law and order, traffic and VIP security but inadequate infrastructural facilities like poor staff strength at various police stations in South Goa has reportedly made the task of detecting cases difficult.

Also with South Goa’s population growing at a fast pace these tasks have become are becoming difficult with 120 thefts cases being reported at various police station in the last seven months .

Police sources say that South Goa’s 11 police stations and three subdivisions are facing a shortage of over 200 police personnel, ranging from police constable to police sub inspectors.

The police say that inadequate police staff will prove to be a boon to criminals if the department fails to deploy the sanctioned strength at all its police stations.

According to one retired police officer as commerce and industry thrives so does crime and Margao is no exception.

He added that with the arrival of the Konkan railway robberies, thefts and assaults have also started increasing but staff strength has not increased.

Over the last five-six years slums and hutments have mushroomed and these slums could lead to an increase in crime.

With these factors in the mind, the South Goa police have started working to strengthen the infrastructure for better functioning and operation.
