which means they were given more medication than actually required, which could endanger their health, a fact confirmed by NACO’s chief coordinator Dr. Alika Deshpande. Take the case of Rajesh Kumar (Name changed) PCR count was 24, 359 on January 10, 2007. Another test on April 18 showed the count had slipped to 1.905. These patients test report results are manipulated so that the patients could avail free a ART treatment at the NACO clinic (anyone above 24,000 viral load and 250 CD4 counts gets free treatment ). Enquiries indicate that fake reports were obtained from a collection center affiliated to SRL Ranbaxy lab. But the documents were forged without the knowledge of the lab. SRL Ranbaxy’s executive Dr. A. Dasgupta confirmed mis-appropriation was found at the collection centre near J.J. Hospital. “We have terminated the contact of the authorised collection centre after the facts came to light,” said Dr. Dasgupta. The needle of suspicion points to Chetan Thakur, a J.J. Hospital employee, on deputation at NACO. But no complaint has been lodged with the police, even though the fraud came to light in March, this year.

However, Dr. Deshpande told that she had lodged a written complaint against Thakur with the Dean of J.J. Hospital early this year. She and her staff even deposed before a committee set up to investigate the charges in March this year. “Thakur managed to escape with light punishment. He is now transferred to the hospital’s library,” said Dr. Deshpande. Thakur allegedly collected between Rs. 300/- and Rs. 4,000/- per patient for arranging fake medical reports from the collection centre, alleged a senior doctor. Social activist Leslie Pereira who works for the welfare of the patients in general and AIDS in particular has exposed the killer attitude of the medial profession for illegal gratification. He also said some of the patients are in very bad shape. The hospital should take a very serious view of the lapses and punish the culprits,” Insiders believe that the racket was continuing with the connivance of senior doctors and other hospital staff. In the aforesaid circumstances as stated above it is due desirable and necessary that kindly probe the matter on top priority relating to the conduct and hostile attitude with regards to treatment towards the said AIDS patients by the said culprits Doctor Alka Deshpande and her accomplices.
