Climate:
The Arunachal Pradesh is situated between latitude 26° 30’ N and 29° 30 ‘ N and longitude 91° 30’ E and 97° 30’ E. Its climate of Arunachal Pradesh varies with topography and altitude. The foothill zone is subtropical and has a hot and humid climate; in the lower valleys, maximum summer temperatures reach 35 °C, while winter minimums drop below 14 °C. Annual rainfall in the State averages about 3,000 mm, falling mostly between April and September. In East and West Siang districts (in the centre of the State), however, this figure approaches 4,064 mm. The average temperature decreases as elevations increase in the mountains.
People:
The density of population is only 10 persons per sq km. The total population of 864,558 (1991) resides in 3,649 villages and three towns. These towns are Pasighat (9,139), Along (8,074), and ltanagar (6,406). About one-tenth of the population is urban. More than half of” the population belongs to scheduled tribes. There are about 25 tribal groups in the State. These tribes generally follow endogamy (marriage within a specific group), while the clans within the tribes follow exogamy (marriage outside a specific group). Most of the population of Arunachal Pradesh is of Asiatic origin and shows physical affinities with the peoples of Tibet and the Myanmar hill region. There are dozens of tribes and subtribes, each with a specific geographic distribution. In western Arunachal Pradesh the main tribes are the Nissi (Nishi, or Dafla), Sulung, Sherdukpen, Aka, Monpa, Apa Tani, and Hill Miri. The central region is occupied by the Adi, the largest tribal group in the State. The Mishmi occupy the northeastern hills, and the Wancho, Nocte, and Tangsa inhabit the southeastern district of Tirap. The tribes are integrated into independent groups having similar lifestyle and occupation. The rural settlement pattern is scattered. The dispersed villages and isolated farmsteads are a typical feature of this area.
